Kokshal-Tau: Undiscovered Tien-Shan

The "celestial mountains", as the Tien-Shan is known, have always attracted travellers and scientist but the complex structure of the ranges remained little known to the outside world. At the beginning of the last century Russian cartographers produced the first reliable maps of this area. Only sporadic exploration has taken place since because access restriction during Soviet times kept large areas "closed".

Kokshal-Tau

Least known are the Borkoldoy and Kokshal-Tau mountains close to the Chinese border. Many mountains rise to over 5000 metres. The highest summit Dankova (5982 m) is situated in the central Kokshal section amongst many other sharp-ridged mountains above deep glacier valleys. The largest glaciers: Korzhinevskova and Gregoreva provide access to the foot of Peaks Dankova, Koroleva (5816 m), Chon-Tura (5780 m), Shmitta (5940 m), Krylja Sovyetov (5429 m) and Zenit (5330 m). During the last years English and Russian expeditions have climbed the highest tops; many more remain untouched. The remote Kokshal-Tau offers untravelled empty valleys amidst wild mountain scenery with many virgin peaks.
